The Lewes Historical Society invites the public for a chance to win an exclusive original painting by local artist Doris Ingram. This beautiful watercolor painting of a scene featuring the Delaware pilot launch Brandywine cruising past the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse evokes memories of both old and new Lewes. The painting is professionally presented in a 16- by-20-inch frame.
Ingram has graciously donated the painting to the society to be raffled off. The image will also be used on the ticket cover of the 2014 Christmas Tour of Lewes, to take place Saturday, Dec. 6.
Raffle tickets are $5 each and are available at the Ryves Holt House Museum Gift Shop through Dec. 22, when the drawing will be held. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 302-645-7670, Ext. 12. All proceeds benefit the society’s programs in education and historic preservation. Note cards and posters featuring the painting are also available at the Museum Gift Shop.
“The Lewes Historical Society thanks Doris for donating the beautiful painting for raffle to benefit the society,” said Mike DiPaolo, LHS executive director. “Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the society’s efforts to continue offering a rich and exciting array of activities that engage our visitors and promote Lewes's unique heritage.”
Ingram shares her time between Delaware and Vermont. In both locations, she appreciates the beautiful scenery, waterways, boats, sunrise and sunset, old homes and barns. “Painting is one of my passions, and so is being outdoors. They are the perfect combo! Watercolor is portable, and I love being onsite to paint,” she said.
Ingram has drawn and taken art classes since childhood and started with watercolor in her 20s. “Over the years, I’ve taken many workshops from well-known artists. Every class is a joy, and you always learn some special thing you can apply to your art,” she said.
“When I moved to Delaware, I was an early member of the Cape Artists and gave the group its name. We had many enjoyable years painting the area and the camaraderie of the group was always a joy. I am now an associate member since I divide my time between Vermont and Delaware.” Ingram is also a signature member of both states’ watercolor societies. Each July, she participates in St. Peter's Art Show, which she has been in since its beginning. She is also an artist member of Peninsula Gallery at 520 E. Savannah Road in Lewes.
Ingram explained her choice of subject for the painting, “My late husband, Bill Ingram, was a Delaware Bay and River Pilot, and his favorite boat was the Brandywine. So that’s the boat I love to paint in all seasons. Our family loves the Christmas Tour of Lewes, and our home has been on it three times. So this is a special honor for me to do the tour book cover.”
